lonemagpieEnough winding up the fanbase with talk of female/black/disabled/American/whatever Doctors, let me be serious for a minute and tell you what *I* personally actually want from the casting:
1) Somebody who's good at playing the Doctor- a mix of steel and courage, and individuality, and brains, and humour, and standing up for what's right, who outsmarts his enemies.
2) bonus selection- Somebody over 30. Really, and that's only because Matt Smith was so young that they can't really go younger with the next one.
That's it. Beyond that, I don't know, or, really, care.
I'm old enough to have no objection to a black/female/foreign/disabled/etc Doctor, but, you know what? My not having an issue with any of those castings is basically conditional on them not being cast as an issue. What I mean is, if the next Doctor just happens to be black/female/whatever but is written as just the Doctor, that's fine. However, if they were then given a ton of "oh, look how different it is to face issues faced by blacks/women/etc" sort of scripts, then it would be a problem, because that'd be fundamentally changing the purpose of the show, and the role of the title character within it.
Because that sort of role, to be the audience's viewpoint for stuff, is the *companion's* role.
So the big question would be how likely is it that the production team would just write such as a Doctor as the Doctor, and resist the urge to make an issue of it, the way they, say, ignored the 7th having a very different accent to the others?
If they could resist that urge, fine, go with that casting. But does anyone reading this think they can?
Well, they could with an American or other foreigner, I think. They *probably* could with a black or asian Doctor. Female? Extremely highly unlikely they could resist making a big deal out of it. Disabled? Not a fucking chance they could resist.
So, what do I really want?
