Day 10 - A movie you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

I dunno about loving, but there are some movies I thought would be iffy that I ended up thinking were pretty decent. Probably 300 is the poster boy for that, inasmuch as the trailers (like this one) alternated between things that made me think it’d be good, and things that made me think it’d be utter shit. So I resisted seeing it for a while, but then when I did see it, I thought it was pretty good, really.

Day 02 - Movie that you think more people should see

There are a lot of possible answers, and my first instinct is to say A Woman’s Face, but the end of that needs rewritten, so I’m going to go with this vintage tale of morality and thoughtfulness, about thinking shit through and not prejudging or knee-jerking.

Day 01 - sequel that should not have been made

Far too many. Far, far too many. But if I have to narrow it down to one, today I’d got with Blues Brothers 2000,, on the grounds that the original is such a cheer-me-up feel-good favourite, and the sequely is notable lacking on the grounds that only one Blues Brother was still alive when it was made.

OK, so I said last night I may look for a 31 day meme to amuse myself during this new month that has 31 days in. And I found one. (when this - http://pamymex3girl.livejournal.com/28548.html - came up on Google.)

And for tonight's relaxation.... This is the movie we're watching.

Speaking of dinosaurs, we got Jurassic World, but I'll want to watch the series in order...

Day 29 - Favourite zombie movie.

Yeah... I probably *should* say Dawn Of The Dead, but I did use that in a previous day's answer, and I see it as more a proper standalone horror epic. But this is so much part of my teenage years I have to go with it, because it's got the mix of everything that a zombie movie is, and it invented the whole "brains" thing. And Linnea Quigley, obviously.

Day 21- Favourite death scene in a movie - Damn, I'm gonna have nominate Alien again here, and Kane's (John Hurt) dinner party... Khan's self-sacrifice with the Genesis device in Star Trek II is runner-up...

Day 20 - Favourite modern horror movie. Well, yeah, this one, today at least. I may be biased for several reasons.

If you don't count this as a horror movie, and think of it purely as an SF film, then a) you have a perfect right to hold that opinion, so long as you know it's wrong, and; b) there would instead be a three-way tie between Dawn Of The Dead (1978), Evil Dead 2, and Re-Animator.

Day 16 - Favourite movie villain.

Yeah, like I could pick just one. So here’s a selection of my favourites. There are many more.

Day 13- Favourite vampire movie. Well, there are plenty of fun vamps out there - Lugosi’s Dracula, Lee’s Dracula, but - unless someone makes a really good adaptation of Fevre Dream (which is my favourite vampire novel, and also still my favourite GRRM book) then the title goes to Katherine Bigelow’s 1987 classic…

Day 8 - Favourite remake of a horror movie :
And this one is absolutely a tie, between two colourfully gory remakes of 1950s monochrome

In the Blue Corner, John Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing, which is also far more faithful to the original novella, Who Goes There?

In the Red Corner, William Malone's 1999 version of The House On Haunted Hill. Now, I know that most critics and Price purists think the remake sucks, but it's great Halloween fun, and the question was "favourite," not "best," so I don't give a shit.

31 Days of Halloween #1

Day 1- Favourite Classic horror movie: A tough choice, as there have been so many good ones over the years, from silent times onwards. Should I go for Caligari or Nosferatu? A classic Universal or Hammer movie?

Well, in the end… I’ll say my favourite Universal classic horror is Bride Of Frankenstein, and favourite Hammer would be Brides Of Dracula, but as for a single favourite Classic, it’s down to a near-tie between Val Lewton’s 1957 Night Of The Demon (based on MR James’s Casting The Runes, with Niall MacGinnis as a very Crowley-like Karswell), and Robert Wise’s 1963 original of The Haunting (based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting Of Hill House.)

For me, I think The Haunting edges it, so that’s my favourite. I’ll post the trailers to both later, in case anyone wants to check them out.

So, Escape

Far from Connie’s greatest movie, but he stole the scenes he was in, by wisely playing against the script. At the same time, I didn’t find it as bad as I feared, on account of having a filthy mind.

Viewing the trailer before was enough to make me notice that it wasn’t a “digging under the wire” kind of POW escape movie, and it came over as sort of a proto-Mission Impossible in some places (how may episodes of that show involved a faked death to rescue somebody?)

Robert Taylor and Norma Shearer were wooden, Philip Dorn had some moments, but other than Connie, Bonita Granville was the one who made an impression, though her actual role seemed confused in the minds of writers and director.

It all felt like… I mean, there are a lot of problems (horrible clunky dialogue, wooden hero, ridiculous uniform inaccuracies, huge levels of coincidence, people switching sides suddenly and with no reason…) but it kept coming up with bits that you just know could have been fantastic if they’d just been slightly tweaked, refined, or - most frequently - actually explained on screen.

So, basically a mess with a couple of standout scene-stealers, that makes me actually want to read the book, because I suspect it will explain all the stuff like who Ursula is actually supposed to fuck up, and what’s wrong with the general…

Just back from seeing How To Train Your Dragon 2- it was great, despite Cate Blanchett's wandering accent, and the feeling that it helps if you've seen the TV series in between the two movies.

I had hoped to get through the whole series before seeing the movie, but have only got through 9 episodes of Riders... I have come to the conclusion from those episodes already that I just love Toothless more than a grown man should, and it will be a permanent source of pain that I can't bond with a live Night Fury of my own...

Why isn't this a better regarded movie? (ditto also The Shadow, and, especially, The Rocketeer. Actually, the hell with it - it's Trailer Tuesday so I'm gonna post their trailers too!)

So, let's ask the same of The Shadow - Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The second of three underrated 90s comics-based movies...

And then there's the very best of them all, with a brilliant Timothy Dalton villain...

A suitable background movie for the evening, while I'm pushing to finish Fortune And Glory over the weekend...

lonemagpie: like it says (fuck it)
Was going to watch Get Shorty, and posted the trailer and everything, but then the cunting disk locked up halfway through, and is fucked - I'll have to get another one.

This pisses me off cos I love that movie.

So now it's too fucking late to put on much of a long movie, so I'm watching Horns Of Nimon, and first time in my life not fucking enjoying it, cos it's not the fucking thing I wanted to be watching tonight.

And now Lesley's all "i'm tired so we have to go to bed after this one episode" so I won't even get to see all of fucking Nimon. Some Saturday night...
