lonemagpie: Jaffar (deep thought)
1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?

Had laser/eye surgery. Had a flu vaccination. Heard Alestorm.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

As I say every year, I don't make them. The way you live your life is for life, not just New Year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Not that I recall.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Bel, the cat I've known the longest, at the age of 17 and a half, in January. Great start to the year, right there.

5. What countries did you visit?

None. Unless you count Wales.

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

The usual- Contracts for paid-up-front work. Stress-free periods of time. No surgeries. (Fat chance of this – there's one next month that I already know about.) Doing some proper fencing, choreography, and self defence workshops.

7. What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

May 24th, me and the boatman pulling a woman from the canal into a water taxi in Leeds. I've been in the right place at the right time to save nine lives over the years, but this one was from water, which for various reasons in my past makes it particularly meaningful to me.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

See the answer above- pulling a woman from the canal.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not attending any convention or teaching any fencing/choreography/self defence workshops... I dunno, really – I'm sure there are too many to choose from.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Eyesight went south in late January, bottoming out around late April/early May, but has largely recovered, to the state it was in around the end of 2015. And of course there have surgeries of one kind or another every few weeks - averages out to at least one a month, though more in the first half of the year than the second, and I managed to have December off from any.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I dunno. Really – can't think of anything specific. Something really cheap in a charity shop, probably.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Lots of people, as always... Lesley, Anne, Lynette, Cedar, Becky and Tony, Tlanti and Tyrone. Grouse. The various eye surgeons...

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Brexiters and Trumpeters.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Bills and arrears and Lesley's SCA adventures.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Nothing much. At least nothing much that actually happened.

16. What song will always remind you of 2016?

Alive by Meatloaf.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? I dunno. The same. Neither?
ii. thinner or fatter? The same.
iii. richer or poorer? The same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Work that paid, of course. Fencing/choreography/self dence workshops teaching and coaching, as I already said. Orgies and bisexual depravity? Political assassination? Bank robbery?

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Having machines shoved down my throat and needles stuck in my eyeballs.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Same as last year- sitting at home, hoping the Dr Who special isn't shit.

21. How will you be spending New Year's?

Same as last year- sitting at home, hoping Sherlock isn't shit.

22. Did you fall in love in 2016?

Not specifically, but I fall in love with Lesley over again all the time. I think I mentioned that in previous years' answers as well.

23. How many one-night stands?

None. Ish.

24. What was your favorite TV program(s)?

Game Of Thrones, Westworld, Ripper Street, Murdoch Mysteries, The Flash, Gotham, etc.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Various politicians I'd never heard of last year. Otherwise just the same people.

26. What was the best book you read?

Probably Stephen King's “Revival” though the end was a bit of a letdown.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Alestorm

28. What did you want and get?

Improvement in health and eyesight? I think.

29. What did you want and not get?

Good paid contracts, the workshops I like to do, an Xbox One, a tidy house....

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

I think Rogue One is the only movie I saw at the cinema this year, so...

31. What did you do on your birthday?

It's next week. Don't remember what I did last year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

I've mentioned the swordy martial arts teaching thing in this already, right? Or if we go with the other meaning of “satisfying” then I've made a crack about orgies and depravity...

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?

Clothed. Occasionally with armour.

34. What kept you sane?

Who said I kept sane? You should feel the inside of my head.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I dunno, I tend to fancy people that I actually know, based on personality, and the purely visual fancying tends to be when I'm watching movies or TV that could be decades old, so who knows what they even look like now, let alone what they're actually like?

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The EU referendum.

37. Who did you miss?

The same people as always, and also Bel.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Cedar the Barefoot Bard, and also not forgetting some other SCA types such as Kirk Poore and Master Ulrik von Matanuska. But Cedar was the one who kept us singing, and was in our pageant!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016:

Probably none of the ones I should.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

We'll roll the old chariot along, and we'll all hang on behind.

I just watched this movie last night, and loved it. More importantly for this post, it gave me the answer to the next 31 day movie meme question:

Day 08 - Movie that should be required high school viewing,

See, my thinking is that a movie which should be shown in schools ought to be educational or developmental in some way - ideally promoting the idea of critical thinking. So my go-to first answer would have ordinarily been Twelve Angry Men, but I already used that as a previous answer, and I don’t want to repeat.

I then thought, fuck it, I’ll just say Battle Royale or Animal House for a laugh. But that would be a dubious choice of reaction, wouldn’t it? Then I saw this last night, and yay!.

This week, at least, I’d nominate The Martian, for the simple reason that it shows the value of studying and learning, and that being a science geek is not a bar to being cool and badass, and may save your life. Also it reminds the audience of today that you can have proper science fiction that does not involve superheroes. So, yeah...
lonemagpie: guy from the cover of sanctuary (Default)
Day 04 - Movie that makes you laugh every time

Oh, I have a selection of favourites. Choose from any of the following:

Airplane!, Top Secret!, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Life Of Brian, Carry On Screaming, Carry On Up The Khyber, The Man With Two Brains, Stripes...
lonemagpie: Bogie & Bacall (Bogie & Bacall)
Gave my love to five of the seven I mentioned re the end of year meme. Wish I could make it six. Three online, one to her face, and to a picture of the one who died.
lonemagpie: Jake and Elwood (blues brothers)
So, in an attempt to start a new and more amusing end of year meme, here are fifteen questions on 2015...

1) What did you do that got you on Santa's Nice list this year?

Well, was my mother-in-law's carer, and tried to be nice and help people...

2) What did you do that got you on Santa's Naughty list this year?

Well, there was this fucking cyclist who got the sharp edge of my tongue a couple of months ago.

3) Is your arse smarting from a visit from the Krampus (or local variant) this year?

Nope, but I know someone who is...

4) What is the most surprising factual discovery about the world that you made this year?

Anal penetration cures hiccups. Don't ask. It puts a new spin on the Blackadder line about Edmund's mother only getting her leg over cos she told her husband it was a cure for hiccups.

5) What is the nicest thing someone or anyone did for you this year?

Too many to name, but I was very touched by a salute from Lynette Nusbacher atone point in August.

6) What is the funniest thing from 2015 – be it something that happened to you, a gag you heard, or whatever?

That moment when there's a keypad above a door, but the door is fixed open so you only have to turn the knob, and people don't know this, so they stand there pressing the buttons and waiting for a beep... until I say "let me help," whip out the sonic screwdriver, buzz the door, and then turn the knob to open it. The look on people's faces...

7) Did you manage to (not) commit any of the seven deadly sins this year?

If I didn't complete the set, I've done something very wrong. I like the lust one the best though- you can keep the others.

8) What's the best meal you had this year?

Dinner at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield in July. What was on the table was as good as what was going on under it.

9) There must be someone who deserves a special mention and virtual medal- nominate at least one here.

[profile] cheyenne7 deserves all the fucking medals. End of.

10) Er... oh, Commandments go with Ten- how many have you managed to break, and did you manage it in a particularly comedic way?Bonus points if you did.

I keep forgetting what they are... I know I haven't killed anybody this year... I definitely do a lot of coveting and breaking the sabbath and taking names in vain... Oh, and, yes, I know thereare actually more than ten commandments, between the various versions.

That said, if we say kill in virtual terms, at the fencing tournament at Yule Ball, where we were supposed to be going for wounds instead of kills, well... I've beenmarried to Lesley for 15 years come February, it was just natural instinct to get the instant throat-shot kill.

11) What's the most embarrassing thing that happened to you, that you're happy to share for laughs?

It may be the same answer as the previous one!

12) What do you want in 2016 that is achievable even if it requires some luck or hard work?

Normal friendships, paid contracts, and, dammit I want to be a fencing marshal. Also, continue to keep the diabetes under control and stay fit and healthy.

13) What are you most proud of having done in 2015? If you answered “none” to the seven deadly sins question, and have an answer to this, go back and fill in the Pride one.

Helped Lesley get her auths and awards and have a good time with her SCA and conrunning and stuff.

14) It's not February, but go and say “I love you” to someone, and mean it. Doesn't have to be on here- phone them, text them, PM them, say it to their face. Just mean it.

Ah, yes... ..

15) Fifteen questions for 2015 sounds about right, so let's end with: What should the 15th question be?

How the fuck should I know?
lonemagpie: Vastra and Jenny (vastra)
So, in an attempt to start a new and more amusing end of year meme, here are fifteen questions on 2015... I#ll do my answers in a little while, but here's the questions...

There won't be 40, though, that's too bloody many. Just 10 or 20 will do.

1) What did you do that got you on Santa's Nice list this year?
2) What did you do that got you on Santa's Naughty list this year?

* - ETA: This is cut and pasted from a Facebook/Tumblr post I made a couple of days ago. Since then, I have seen The Force Awakens, and it was pretty damn great too.

Forgot to paste this across from FB and Tumblr the other day.

Day 30 – A Halloween foodstuff/cocktail/recipe

OK, pumpkin soup is a nice winter warmer. Use a pound or so chopped pumpkin, three small potatoes or sweet potatoes, a couple of mid-sized carrots, a red pepper, some red onion. All of these should be chopped up, then reduced further in a blender.

Chuck them all into a stock pot with a couple of chicken stock cubes, a cup of lentils and a cup of yellow split peas. season with sea salt, black pepper, garlic granules, paprika, a hint of nutmeg and some turmeric and ground coriander. Finally, a dash of worcester sauce.

Boil it up, simmer for a hour, and throw in some cream when you turn it off. Job done. Fiddle with the amounts for personal preference in taste and texture.

Day 31 – Are you guising/cosplaying/dressing-up, and if so, as who/what?

Not on Halloween but I am going to a halloween party on Sunday, so may do the War Doctor again…

Day 29 - Favourite zombie movie.

Yeah... I probably *should* say Dawn Of The Dead, but I did use that in a previous day's answer, and I see it as more a proper standalone horror epic. But this is so much part of my teenage years I have to go with it, because it's got the mix of everything that a zombie movie is, and it invented the whole "brains" thing. And Linnea Quigley, obviously.

Day 25 - A book that creeped you out: Not sure there is one, actually. Really not sure.

Day 26 - Favourite *bad* as in cheesy, crappy, guilty-pleasure, horror movie: That varies from day to day, but today... Lifeforce.

Day 27 – Where do you expect to end up when you die- Heaven, Hell, wormfood, or something else?: Personally I expect to regenerate as usual.

Day 24 - Favourite horror movie based on actually historically verifiable real events:

Oh, so many options... Every other stalk'n'slash and serial killer flick is based on Ed Gein, there's always The Exorcist, and a good case could be made for The Entity, if it didn't jump the shark in the last reel. So I'm going to cheat and say... Ghostwatch, written by Stephen Volk. Yeah, it was for TV, but it's 90 minutes, so good enough for me - and obviously inspired by the Enfield poltergeist case. (Google it if you're unfamiliar with it.)

Day 23- Favourite literary non-ghost horror story.

Think as far as vintage stuff is concerned I'm going to have to go with...

At The Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft
lonemagpie: guy from the cover of sanctuary (Default)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 21- Favourite death scene in a movie - Damn, I'm gonna have nominate Alien again here, and Kane's (John Hurt) dinner party... Khan's self-sacrifice with the Genesis device in Star Trek II is runner-up...
lonemagpie: gojira patronus (gojira)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 19- A Halloween tradition that you have.

Watch horror movies, and read MR James, basically. In recent years I've carved a pumpkin for the window too - which means making pumpkin soup.
lonemagpie: Craig icon (007)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 18 - A Videogame that creeped you out.

FEAR has some good moments in that vein - it's mostly a first-person shooter, but Alma's appearances are very effective that way...
lonemagpie: guy from the cover of sanctuary (jaffar)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 16 - Favourite movie villain.

Yeah, like I could pick just one. So here’s a selection of my favourites. There are many more.

lonemagpie: McGoohan as Number 6 (6)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 15- Your greatest fear. To be honest, I don't know. I mean, I know I have fears - dentists, that kind of thing - but.... When it comes to what people would think of as a greatest fear - something, say, that keeps you up at night with dread, just to think about it - well, I have a slight problem in that the ones I can think of actually all pretty much already happened. Which sort of robs them of their power as fears, if you see what I mean.

So, I don't know, really. I more have greatest anger triggers or depression triggers, or stressors, than a greatest fear in that sense.
lonemagpie: 10Doc whats (wtf)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 14 - A question you’ve always wanted to ask about a horror trope:

Well, what I had in mind actually started out as a specifically Buffy trope, but, post-Buffy, has become pretty commonplace in a lot of films and shows. And that is, how, why, and when do the dead miraculously get martial arts training? Especially vampires. I mean, I can understand them being able to put in the 10k hours over the centuries, with the whole immortality thing, but what gets me is the freshly-resurrected ones who have instantly got it, no matter what they did in life.

So, where does it fit in- brain death, rigor mortis, first dan...?
lonemagpie: Craig icon (007)
http://originallonemagpie.tumblr.com/post/98823492812/october-31-days-of-halloween

Day 13- Favourite vampire movie. Well, there are plenty of fun vamps out there - Lugosi’s Dracula, Lee’s Dracula, but - unless someone makes a really good adaptation of Fevre Dream (which is my favourite vampire novel, and also still my favourite GRRM book) then the title goes to Katherine Bigelow’s 1987 classic…
