Day 10 - A movie you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

I dunno about loving, but there are some movies I thought would be iffy that I ended up thinking were pretty decent. Probably 300 is the poster boy for that, inasmuch as the trailers (like this one) alternated between things that made me think it’d be good, and things that made me think it’d be utter shit. So I resisted seeing it for a while, but then when I did see it, I thought it was pretty good, really.

I just watched this movie last night, and loved it. More importantly for this post, it gave me the answer to the next 31 day movie meme question:

Day 08 - Movie that should be required high school viewing,

See, my thinking is that a movie which should be shown in schools ought to be educational or developmental in some way - ideally promoting the idea of critical thinking. So my go-to first answer would have ordinarily been Twelve Angry Men, but I already used that as a previous answer, and I don’t want to repeat.

I then thought, fuck it, I’ll just say Battle Royale or Animal House for a laugh. But that would be a dubious choice of reaction, wouldn’t it? Then I saw this last night, and yay!.

This week, at least, I’d nominate The Martian, for the simple reason that it shows the value of studying and learning, and that being a science geek is not a bar to being cool and badass, and may save your life. Also it reminds the audience of today that you can have proper science fiction that does not involve superheroes. So, yeah...

Day 07 - Least favourite movie by a favourite actor or actress

I thought I was going to get a two-for one here, with Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver in either Hanover Street or Half Moon Street, and couldn’t remember which it was called.

But then it turns out they’re actually two different movies, the first with Ford and the second with Weaver...

(I have lots of favourite actors and actresses, but just went here cos of the chance for one of each in the same movie. )

Day 06 - Movie that makes you cry every time

Every time? Noy sure there is one.Wrath of Khan maybe comes close...

Oh, wait, no: House Of Flying Daggers, though it’d be really damn near impossible to explain why, so I’m not going to, beyond “It just speaks to me that way.”

Day 05 - Movie you loathe

This is actually surprisingly difficult to answer. I mean, think about it: for the most part movies I disliked tend to be ones that bored me, or were very ineptly made, while ones that I might find objectionable I generally know about in advance so don’t watch them... Whereas “loathe” would mean something I willingly sat through, and which offended me in some other way than mere boredom or incompetence...

Which makes it difficult to think of one that qualifies.

In fact, the only two that spring to mind, for very different reasons, would be:

1) Disney’s Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Because they fuck with the storyy to change it so that the blonde-haired,blue-eyed Aryan guard captain gets the love of Esmerelda, while Quasimodo learns to think that fifteen minutes of fame is what make’s his life worthile before he returns to obscurity. It’s the fucking Leni Riefenstahl version of the story.

2) Insidious. I’m sure it’s spooky and clever, but since the sound track to the first half consists largely of screaming baby and shouting children, it’s just worthless pain and torture for a misophonic, and by the time the actual plot stars, I really, really *need* to either run the fuck into the woods, smash the TV, punch people in the face, or all three. (Seriously, if you’re misophonic, do even think of trying to watch unless you turn the sound off and read th closed captioning.)

Day 04 - Movie that makes you laugh every time

Oh, I have a selection of favourites. Choose from any of the following:

Airplane!, Top Secret!, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Life Of Brian, Carry On Screaming, Carry On Up The Khyber, The Man With Two Brains, Stripes...

31 Day Movie Meme #3

Day 03- Favourite Oscar-nominated movie from most recent ballot

Well, pretty much has to be Mad Max: Fury Road, on the grounds that (unless we count the technical awards) it’s the only one I’ve seen.

Day 02 - Movie that you think more people should see

There are a lot of possible answers, and my first instinct is to say A Woman’s Face, but the end of that needs rewritten, so I’m going to go with this vintage tale of morality and thoughtfulness, about thinking shit through and not prejudging or knee-jerking.

Day 01 - sequel that should not have been made

Far too many. Far, far too many. But if I have to narrow it down to one, today I’d got with Blues Brothers 2000,, on the grounds that the original is such a cheer-me-up feel-good favourite, and the sequely is notable lacking on the grounds that only one Blues Brother was still alive when it was made.
