Stairs stained
May. 13th, 2013 01:28 pmThat's the stairs done with mahogany woodstain, and bloody hell... wow. I mean, fuck! They look like something out of a proper historical set. (I am a bit of a history fetishist, so this is good)). I may do the walls in cream if I don't repeat the sort of russet orange/umber that's on them.
In either case, the stairs only took half the tin of woodstain, so I'll be stripping and sanding the flaky blue handrail and staining that to match the stairs.
(For those wondering about getting the woodstain off hands, washing up liquid and a sponge does it.)
It's quick-drying stuff, so I shouldn't to pop to the bog before it's dry - but I should say for those painting/staining/varnishing stairs and who may have to go up and down them before they're dry, thet the best thing to do is do all the risers and alternate treads, then do the undonde treads the next day. (Don't be tempted to paint one half, then the other when the first half is dry- I strongly suspect that'd leace a visible line down the middle, though I'm not stupid enough to try it in order to confirm that one way or the other!)
ETA- Obviously one gets rid of the sanding dust and specks immediately after the sanding stage - I maybe should have mentioned this yesterday when I posted about the sanding - and wipes down the surfaces again immediately before applying the whatever.
