Working Wednesday - King Solomon's Mines

Working Wednesday- I always loved the music from King Solomon's Mines, even though the movie is rubbish (albeit something of a guilty pleasure) - it's a great fun Jerry Goldsmith score.

And since I'm writing about the search for this legendary location today, it's an appropriate musical medley....

I saw this movie once when I was 12 (I think. It was ~26 yrs back) only because my family knew Ken Gampu personally. The film sucked horribly (except for the bit where the characters roll down the hill in the big pot– hilarious), but yeah, this music!

I'm commenting, because listening to the vid you embedded made me exclaim severally, "So that's where that remembered snatch of melody came from." Also hearing pre-echoes of The Mummy soundtrack in this (about 06:12 onwards). Goldsmith was awesome at mood and place, I think. A lot of the 'newbies' don't get that right.

Thanks!

Goldsmith composed the score for the The Mummy and Silvestri composed for The Mummy Returns. Tbh, I was disappointed in Sivestri's work on TMR. I dunno why he didn't do a Goldsmith and go bold with big brass and dramatic tympani. Or maybe, y'know, after the Goldsmith score for TM, anything else would've sounded tame?

Another Goldsmith score that I love is the one from The Edge. It's bold in parts but rather thoughtful in others. The same can be said for The River Wild. I really liked it when he dipped into 'thoughtful' as opposed to just 'drop-dead beautiful'. Some of his melodies, while having that instant tears-oh-wow beauty, are rather predictable (you can guess the next notes). The thoughtful sort of ones are a just as beautiful but also more complex.

Umm, and I have rambled on. Music is a drug.

...and now I'm spamming you, but I totally forgot! Have you ever seen Papillion? Goldsmith wrote the score to that, and it's really different to a lot of his other scores. Here.

Gone!
