book log Skulduggery Pleasant
OK, like so many people I know, I'll try keeping a book log this year...
Some books I read for work, others for recreation, so I'm just going to stick with the recreational ones in this... and the first finished recreational read of 2013 is Skulduggery Pleasant, by Derek Landy.
It's a YA book - teen gets involved in magical world (set in Dublin, unusually) with a hidden magical war... but funny, with accessible prose, and just the right tone - engaging characters, not taking itself (or themselves) too seriously, and a preponderance of amusing dialogue. The action is surprising well done for prose, and relies a lot on Buffy-style swords and martial arts, but I mean thin is a good way - it gave me the same thrill/vibe as I used to get from a new Buffy battle. Cool.
Apparently it's the first of a series, and I'd happily read more if I come across them. 9/10. A movie would also be most welcome.
